Court halts execution before a Texas inmate makes history as first man to be executed over shaken baby case. The death row inmate had written to the state governor pleading for clemency. Just last week, Robert Roberson, who had spent decades behind bars, reached out to Governor Greg Abbott. The inmate had been given an ultimatum to choose how he wanted to die. Following his death sentence he had three options. There was death by lethal injection, firing squad, or hanging. Failure to choose left him with only one choice—lethal injection.
Texas High Court Pauses Execution in Shaken Baby Case
According to AP News, hours before sealing his fate, the death row inmate was held in Huntsville. But in a surprising turn of events, his execution was halted by the Texas Supreme Court. Amid reaching out to the governor establishing his hope and innocence, Roberson was shocked at the outcome.
Amanda Hernandez from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice revealed was full of thanks. He praised God and thanked his supporters. The inmate has since been returned to Polunsky Unit, Texas male death row prison.
Amid his imprisonment, the offender has had many politicians on his side. Both Republicans and Democrats believe that he is innocent. For weeks now, his lawyers claimed that condemnation for shaken baby syndrome was an unfair judgment for the Texas inmate. Through recent findings, they punched holes in the prosecutors’ arguments.
Roberson was first convicted in 2002 after losing his 3-year-old daughter, Nikki. Doctors confirmed that the man had brought in a bruised child who possibly suffered abuse. To lap it up, they blamed the father whom they claimed showed zero emotions. Soon enough, the medical officials ruled that Nikki’s death was a purposeful act. In their words, she had died of shaken baby syndrome.
