A gang of gunmen on jet skis opened fire at a Cancun beach flooded with people and killed a 12-year-old boy.

On Sunday, the gang members were reportedly targeting rival drug dealers on Kukulcán Boulevard in the municipality of Benito Juárez, ABC News reports.

Authorities believe the targeted shooting of the boy was intentional as “attackers arrived by sea, aboard a jet ski shooting at some people presumably in dispute for drug sales.”

“The authorities arrived immediately and the minor was transferred to the hospital where, unfortunately, he lost his life,” prosecutors said.

The Mexican boy and his family live in the area.

Since the incident, the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory for Americans to “exercise increased caution” while traveling. The Mexican cartel is also a serious threat to travelers.
