A 12-year-old Georgia boy sustained serious burns and had to be hospitalized after his friends allegedly poured boiling water on his face while he was asleep. The incident occurred during a sleepover prank that went wrong, according to WALB News 10.

The boy was at a neighbor’s apartment in Tifton, Georgia. He was joined by three other boys aged between 12 and 15. The kids were reportedly playing video games, as shared by his mother, Tiffany West. West reported that one of the boys thought it would be funny to pour hot water on the sleeping boy, resulting in second-degree burns primarily on his face.

West’s son was taken to a burn center in Augusta, where he had surgery and is now recovering at home, she informed the outlet. The devastated mother expressed her anger over the reckless prank that harmed her child. “I mean, I really can’t describe it now. In that moment I was just mad, hurt, in shock. Everything, I was seeing red,” she said.

The three boys involved were arrested. They have since been released to their families as they await their court hearings scheduled for next month, according to the report. The family is facing difficult times after having to take off from work due to the incident. They have been struggling with increasing medical expenses as his recovery is expected to take 12 to 14 days, the Aunt told the outlet. She also noted that her nephew would require counseling to help him mentally heal.

West took to Facebook calling her son a

“warrior and strong”

as she expressed her gratitude to those who donated and left her family

“encouraging words”

as her son takes time to heal.

“All of your donations are very APPRECIATED & it’s all for my son! Every donation, gift, encouraging words & prayer put a SMILE on my son face!”

she added.
