A 15-year-old boy has been found guilty of manslaughter after fatally attacking 80-year-old Bhim Kohli in Leicester’s Franklin Park last September. The brutal assault, which left the retired factory owner with broken ribs and fatal spinal injuries, was partially filmed by a 13-year-old girl who laughed during the incident. She was also convicted of manslaughter for encouraging the violence.
Kohli was walking his dog near his home when the boy, wearing a balaclava, launched an unprovoked attack. The boy, previously enraged after a breakup, admitted to struggling with anger and later told friends, “I didn’t mean to batter him.”
Evidence included disturbing video clips hidden in the girl’s Snapchat archive, showing Bhim Kohli on his knees being struck with a plastic sandal. The Daily Mail reports that the court heard the boy had a history of aggression and had gone to the park “prepared for violence.”
The girl had reportedly taken a photo of Mr. Kohli a week earlier and pointed him out before the attack. Kohli’s daughter, Susan, delivered a heartbreaking statement outside court, describing her father as a kind, vibrant man.
“They humiliated and laughed at him,” she said. “We feel anger and disgust toward the teenagers who took Dad from us.”
Both teens remain unnamed due to their age. The boy was remanded in custody while the girl was granted bail. Sentencing is scheduled for next month, when the judge will consider whether to lift their anonymity.
