Sadly, 15-year-old Amanda Sylvester of Georgia suffered from cardiac arrest after an ambulance never showed up, officials say, according to the New York Post. The teen collapsed while at volleyball practice and although medical professionals arrived to examine Sylvester after she fell, the ambulance that was originally called failed to arrive.
A spokesman for Fulton County, Bill Crane, told 11Alive,
“Within about eight minutes, College Park Fire Rescue EMTS were on site..The young lady, by then, was conscious, evaluated, and assessed. Her vitals were all normal; she was making eye contact, her pupils weren’t dilated, and she was conversant.”
The teen’s mother later took her to Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital when the ambulance failed to show up for 40 mins. At the hospital, she sadly experienced cardiac failure and was revived just once before she was declared dead.
Grady Memorial Hospital responded, noting that the call wasn’t categorized as a high priority.
“A College Park Fire unit responded to the scene and was equipped to provide medical care and transport if necessary. Following an update on the patient’s condition, the call was reclassified, and a Grady EMS unit was promptly dispatched,”
said the ambulance service.
The statement continued,
“However, as our unit was en route, College Park Fire determined that additional EMS support was no longer needed due to the patient being transported to the hospital via personal vehicle.”
