According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, 22-year-old Katelynn Hipes, the woman accused of murdering 47-year-old Kevin Small, has been located and taken into custody. She was arrested after evading the authorities for five days.
Authorities say the Harrisonburg Police Department received a tip that she was in the area. Acting on that information, officers executed a search warrant at a residence on Lee Avenue.
Around 4:00 p.m., Hipes was found inside the home and arrested without incident, officials confirmed.
According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), the deceased was discovered outside his home in Shipman, Nelson County, on April 18, with a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Though officials identified a suspect the same day, they held off on releasing Hipes’ name. The officials believed it could have jeopardized efforts to find her overnight. A day later, the NCSO confirmed her identity and announced the search had expanded beyond the area.
According to WDJB7, Katelynn Hipes has been found and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
