A group of three scammers stole $3,500 in recent robberies near NYU. In one incident, they approached a 14-year-old boy, asking for donations for a sports team before swindling him. The three swindlers asked the teen for the donation around 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, then threatened him and used an app to transfer $350 from his phone.
The scammers left the scene and are believed to have targeted another victim on Jan. 8. They approached a 19-year-old man at East 4th Street and Broadway around 12:50 p.m. They requested to exchange cash and accompanied him to an ATM, where he ended up withdrawing $1,400, according to officials.
The con artists then took the money and ran away on foot. In a separate robbery around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 11, the thieves approached a 23-year-old man on Astor Place near Lafayette Street, requesting donations, per reports from officials.
The suspects threatened the victim and ordered him to withdraw $800 from an ATM. They also used an app on his phone to transfer $1,000 to themselves, according to police. After taking the cash, they fled. Authorities stated that no injuries were reported during any of the three robberies.
