A tragic incident unfolded in Florida when 4-year-old Chosen Morris accidentally shot himself in the head after discovering a handgun in his parents’ vehicle, authorities reported.

The child found the Smith & Wesson M&P .40 caliber pistol, which belonged to his father, under the driver’s seat. The Davenport Police Department stated that he unintentionally fired the weapon while waiting in the car for his family to join him for a dinner outing.

Police Chief Steve Parker recounted the heartbreaking event. Chosen Morris’s mother, Quinta, initially mistook the gunshot for the sound of something breaking.

When she asked her two older children if they had caused the noise, they denied it. That’s when she began searching for her youngest child and found him in the car, suffering from a gunshot wound.

As a nursing student, the mother immediately attempted to provide medical assistance while the family rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Chosen succumbed to his injuries the following afternoon.

Authorities believe the young boy, excited about the family’s plans for the evening, climbed into the vehicle ahead of them. While inside, he found the unsecured firearm, leading to the fatal discharge. Per Fox 13 Tampa, Chief Parker, visibly emotional during a briefing, expressed the devastating impact of the incident.

According to police, Chosen’s father, Robert, kept the handgun for personal protection while commuting to and from work. After returning home on Thursday, he forgot the firearm in the vehicle, where it remained the following day since he had no work obligations.
