On Friday, officials reported that many monkeys, which escaped from a South Carolina medical research center, were still at large. Some were seen hanging from trees after a worker accidentally left their enclosure door open, prompting officials to recommend residents to stay away, per the New York Post

Some female Rhesus monkeys, weighing about six pounds and eating fruit and insects, were seen running on a warehouse roof and near a local food pantry. They escaped Thursday morning when a staffer tidying up their enclosure left the door slightly open, according to the CEO of the lab, Greg Westergaard.

The CEO informed NBC,

“The incident yesterday involved a new enclosure, and occurred because the caretaker who was doing routine cleaning and feeding failed to secure two separate doors. It was purely human error.”

As of Friday afternoon, none of the monkeys had been caught, but Westergaard believed they would likely return on their own. The center informed police that the young monkeys were unlikely to hold diseases, but locals were advised not to approach them.
