A 55-year-old woman’s vacation went sour after she was reportedly attacked by a six-foot shark while swimming at a beach on the Providenciales island of Turks and Caicos. The authorities revealed that she was trying to take pictures with the animal.

According to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, the unfortunate incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Feb. 7. The Daily Telegraph reported that the Canadian tourist was only a few steps into the water at Thompson Cove Beach when she was attacked.

The species of the shark involved is still unidentified. However, it is confirmed to be approximately 6 feet in length. The police confirmed to the media outlet that the woman attempted to engage with the animal to take photographs.

Her husband ran into the water after the attack to scare the shark away to avoid more injuries. As a result of the encounter with the aquatic beast, one of her arms was amputated below the wrist. Per The Daily Telegraph, the other arm was amputated at the halfway point of her forearm.

The beach was shut down the next day after the incident by the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR), part of the Turks and Caicos Islands Government. But reports have it that it has reopened.

DECR reminded the public to exercise caution when enjoying the coastal and marine environments.

P.S: Stop chumming & hand feeding sharks at destination vacations.
