71-Year-Old Man Punched Off-Duty Cop After His Granddaughter Was Handcuffed For Shoplifting

Officials apprehended John Smith for reportedly hitting an officer in the face after his granddaughter was handcuffed for stealing at Walmart. The incident occurred on Dec. 4 at around 4:30 p.m. when officials were called to the scene, according to WTVO.

Katherine Robertson was apprehended in the parking lot for theft while her 71-year-old grandfather, Smith, watched from his van. He exited his vehicle, grabbed the stolen items, and tried to drive away. When an officer intervened by reaching into the vehicle to “turn it off,” Smith punched him in the face.

The officer reported that he threw a punch back and then arrested Smith. Walmart’s loss prevention team provided surveillance footage of the incident. Smith now faces charges of aggravated battery in a public place and aggravated battery against an officer.
