A young woman who is emotionally connected to her AI boyfriend shared the highs and lows of her digital romance. Surprisingly, her human husband isn’t flinching as he believes the bot is helping her in a way.
While some people prefer getting information using AI technology, Ayrin prefers to load her bot with personal details to give her the perfect boyfriend. According to People, the 28-year-old poured out her heart in a discussion with The New York Times, claiming that she had fallen in love with the bot.
Funnily enough, having an AI boyfriend began as an inquisitive experiment. Ayrin —not her real name —was inspired by a video on Instagram that taught her how to customize the AI. Ultimately, she adjusted her AI boyfriend, Leo, to her specifications. Aryin asked it to react as a possessive and protective lover— and it soon engaged in flirtatious conversations.
During this time, the 28-year-old and her husband, Joe, hit a rough patch financially, which made them move in with their parents. Still, the real-life couple kept in touch and maintained a long-distance romance. But on the other end, this time apart made Ayrin grow more confident in her AI boyfriend.
She renewed her subscription to the bot after the first trial ended, spending about $200 which is now monthly. After getting addicted to Leo, Ayrin tells friends she can spend $1000 a month to speak to her self-created lover.
Meanwhile, her husband does not feel threatened at all. He confessed to seeing it for what it is, claiming that it is not the same as cheating with a human. Joe tags it as his wife’s virtual pal that can “talk sexy to her.”
