An American Airlines flight almost collided with a mountain range in Hawaii but avoided disaster when instructed to quickly elevate to

“avoid danger.”

Flight 298, headed for Los Angeles, had just departed from Honolulu at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when air traffic control told the crew to

“expedite your climb”

for safety, reports LiveATC.

The traffic controller told the pilot,

“Number 298 turn right, expedite your climb through terrain and then turn right.”

Officials believe the quick rise prevented the plane from crashing into the Koʻolau mountain range in Oʻahu. This dramatic altitude increase occurred after the pilot did not make the required turn during takeoff from Honolulu International Airport, as stated by an FAA official to NBC News.

According to an American Airlines statement, the

“crew of American Airlines flight 298 requested and received right-turn clearance and complied with controller instructions… There were no issues with terrain clearance based on the trajectory of the aircraft.”
