A family is mourning after a 2-year-old was reportedly shot in the head in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 13.

The incident occurred on Bell Street in southeast Atlanta, according to WSBTV.

Police have not identified the child nor a suspect and have not commented on what led up to the shooting.

The sad story is still developing.

Homicides in Atlanta have dropped for the second year in a row, according to the AJC, but the levels are still higher than they were before the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic.

“Crime is down in Atlanta, particularly, homicides are down once again this year,” Mayor Andre Dickens proclaimed earlier this year.

“The number one reduced area of crime in our city last year was vehicle theft, 29% down over the previous year. If you look at robberies, robberies were down 15%. Persons shot in our city is down 7%,” Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said.

Ironically, the area where crime has reportedly dropped the most is Southeast Atlanta where this infant was killed.

This is the second shooting of a 2-year-old in the Atlanta area in a month. A 2-year-old child was hospitalized after being accidentally shot by their twin sibling on Wednesday, March 12, according to People. For more information on safe firearm storage and the most effective ways to protect children from unsecured firearms, visit BeSMARTforkids.org.
