The family of Melvin Tyrone Bush, a 59-year-old detainee who died at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center (OCADC) in March 2023 in #Minnesota, has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that jail staff and healthcare providers failed to provide appropriate medical care, leading to his death from acute complications of a perforated duodenal ulcer.
According to the lawsuit, Bush was arrested on March 1, 2023, for allegedly violating a Domestic Abuse No Contact Order, Law & Crime reports. Upon his booking into the OCADC, he informed jail staff of his high blood pressure and his prescription for Suboxone, a medication used to treat opioid dependence.
The complaint alleges that during his detention, Bush experienced severe abdominal pain and repeatedly pleaded for help and requested medical attention. However, the jail staff and healthcare providers ignored his condition, leaving him untreated in his cell, according to the lawsuit.
On March 5, 2023, a detention deputy found Bush unresponsive during a routine well-being check. Resuscitation efforts were initiated, but Bush was pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital emergency room.
Bush died from acute complications of a perforated duodenal ulcer, a serious medical condition that requires prompt and appropriate care.
The lawsuit, filed by Bush’s daughter, #AreryanaBush, alleges that staff from Advanced Correctional Healthcare and OCADC deputies failed to provide necessary medical attention, leading to his death.
