On Sunday, a suspected shoplifter at Houston’s Galleria Mall fled from police. He reportedly leaped from the second floor and crashed onto the ice skating rink below. The unfortunate incident left him immobilized.

KPRC 2 reported the incident, which occurred around 2:20 p.m. when Houston Police Department officers, working off-duty at the mall, responded to a reported theft at a store.

The officers quickly spotted the accused thief. As they pursued him, he bolted, ultimately jumping from the mall’s upper level. According to bystander Ken Gilliard, who captured the scene on video, he landed hard on the ice rink, unable to move his legs.

“He just fell from up there, landed straight on ice,” Gilliard exclaimed in the footage, which showed the man sprawled on the rink.

Houston Police officers rushed onto the ice to assist the suspect, who was later taken to a hospital with injuries. Authorities confirmed to KPRC 2’s Gage Goulding that the man faces pending theft charges and evading police.

His identity remains withheld until formal charges are filed. The report did not specify whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident. The dramatic escape attempt left onlookers stunned at the bustling Houston shopping center.
