Bunnak Hannah Landon was sentenced to life without parole on May 6 for the 2023 murder of 6-year-old Bella Fontenelle, according to WWL-TV. A Jefferson Parish judge also gave Landon 80 more years for obstruction of justice.
Landon was convicted last week of first-degree murder and two obstruction counts. She had claimed insanity. However, prosecutors countered with evidence that she knew what she was doing.
Bella and her sister were under Bunnak Hannah Landon’s care on April 25, 2023, while their father worked late in Kenner. That evening, Landon killed Bella and placed her body in a 13-gallon bucket, which she left at the girl’s mother’s home. Surveillance footage showed her pulling the bucket in a wagon.
An Amber Alert was issued the next morning. Bella’s grandmother discovered the bucket. Authorities found Bella’s body inside, in pajamas.
The coroner ruled she died from strangulation and blunt-force trauma. A video recovered from Bunnak “Hannah” Landon’s buried phone showed Bella crying and asking for her grandmother. This was shortly before her death.
Despite her defense citing PTSD from surviving Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge, the jury agreed with prosecution experts who said Landon understood her actions.
