Caught On Camera: Alabama Man Sues Police For $20M After Firing Taser In His Back While Handcuffed

Pickens County Sheriff's Office

On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Micah Washington, 25, filed a $20 million federal civil rights lawsuit against Reform Police Officer #DanaElmore, alleging excessive force during a December 2024 incident in Pickens County, #Alabama.

The lawsuit also names Elmore’s husband, former #Pickens County Sheriff’s Deputy #JodyElmore, and the city of Reform as defendants, AP News reports.

According to the lawsuit, Washington was changing a flat tire near his aunt’s house when Officer Elmore approached him and a friend.

A video of the encounter, which circulated widely, appears to show Washington in handcuffs informing Elmore that he has a gun. Elmore retrieves the weapon and then shocks Washington in the back with a Taser. “Do you want it again?” Elmore appears to say in the video, before cursing at Washington and telling him to shut up.

Washington expressed that the encounter has left him fearful of police interactions.

The lawsuit accuses the Elmores of excessive force, wrongful detainment, and constitutional violations. It also seeks accountability from the city of Reform for what civil rights attorney #KristenGochett described as a “culture of tolerance for police misconduct.”

Washington was charged with obstructing governmental operations, resisting arrest, and marijuana possession following the incident. However, his attorneys claim the marijuana charge was fabricated to justify his arrest.
