Justin Sutherland, a nationally recognized celebrity chef, is facing serious charges after his girlfriend said he threatened her with a gun and choked her.

On July 1, Sutherland was charged with one count of felony threats of violence – reckless disregard risk, according to a statement of probable cause obtained by PEOPLE.

The 24-year-old victim claims that Sutherland pointed a gun at her and hit her square in the chest and threatened: “Don’t come back here or I am going to shoot you.”

The woman went on to allege that Sutherland put his hands around her neck and choked her for about five to six seconds, the outlet reports.

Sutherland is the co-host of the syndicated Fast Foodies on TruTV. He has also been a judge on Guy’s Grocery Games, Beat Bobby Flay, Kitchen Crash, Chopped, Guy’s Ranch Kitchen and a notable Food Network Iron Chef winner and season finalist on Top Chef: Kentucky, according to his bio.

“Mr. Sutherland vehemently denies all the allegations in the complaint,” Sutherland’s attorney, John Daly, tells PEOPLE. “He never threatened to shoot anyone. He did not physically assault his girlfriend. He looks forward to the truth coming out as the court process unfolds.”

Sutherland denies the abuse allegations, saying that he and the woman had only a verbal disagreement.
