A 41-year-old man has been arrested for preying on a 13-year-old girl who he allegedly impregnated and later murdered when he learned she was with child.

Jarvis Butts of Michigan has been charged with “first-degree murder, criminal sexual conduct in the second degree and possession of child sexually abusive material in the disappearance and suspected death of Na’Ziyah Harris in Detroit” Law & Crime reports.

Butts reportedly was a child predator and would make friends with the mother of girls he wanted to prey upon. He also allegedly has been grooming Na’Ziyah since 2022, when he reportedly started sexually assaulting her.

Na’Ziyah’s family reported her missing after she didn’t come home from school January 9. Witnesses reported seeing her with Butts and he later got a hotel room.c

“Na’Ziyah was never seen or heard from again,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy told reporters at a press conference. “Not from her family, not from her schoolmates, not from her friends, not from her social media where she was extremely active with her friends, not from her teachers, no one.”

Na’Ziyah’s body, however, has yet to be found, but prosecutors are confident that she is not alive.

Butts is a reported sex offender and has been in jail since August on other charges. He is expected to be arraigned this week.
