For the first time since his arrest, Lance “Macho” Morales faced a judge in a courtroom in Hartford, Connecticut. The Connecticut native had been slapped with a series of charges over the murder of a mom and her little child.

On December 30, Morales, who was arrested in November, showed up in court. But this first-time appearance also brought new details of his case to light. The 23-year-old was first accused of killing Jessiah Mercado, 20, and her infant son, Mezziah Diaz. Diaz was only 4-months-old and unfortunately, he happened to be inside a car at the time of the shooting.

Prosecutors maintain that Morales aimed his firearm at his vehicle, a Mazda SUV that was rented by Mercado. He shot severally at the car, injuring one of the passengers. Consequently, the suspect who fired in broad daylight also shot and killed the young mom and her infant.

Sources confirmed that Lance Morales was enraged because Mercado had failed to pay up the $400 that she owed. According to The Associated Press, he charged her $100 per day. Before eventually pulling the trigger, the suspect had confronted the deceased who allegedly explained that her son was inside the vehicle. An eyewitness revealed that Morales boldly affirmed that he didn’t care before he proceeded to act.

After the crime, the Connecticut native fled to Puerto Rico. But on November 23, he was arrested— over the weekend, he was extradited to the U.S. Morales now faces life behind bars as he is charged with two counts of murder and assault.
