Country artist Conner Smith, 24, known for hits like “I Hate Alabama,” was identified as the driver in a tragic Nashville accident that claimed the life of 77-year-old Dorothy Dobbins.
The incident occurred on Sunday when Smith’s Chevrolet Silverado struck Dobbins in a crosswalk, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. The New York Post reported that Dobbins was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Sadly, that was where she succumbed to her injuries.
Police noted that Smith’s failure to yield to the pedestrian was the primary cause. However, he showed no signs of impairment. As the investigation continues, no charges have been filed.
Smith’s attorney expressed the singer’s condolences, stating, “His heart goes out to Ms. Dobbins’ family.” The attorney also confirmed the singer’s cooperation with authorities, per People.
The accident coincided with the final day of CMA Fest in Nashville. Smith, a local signed to Big Machine Records’ Valory label, has not commented publicly. His debut album, Didn’t Go Too Far, dropped last year, and his music, including “Country in the Clouds,” recently gained traction on social media.
Conner Smith is touring nationwide and has been married to surfer Leah Thompson since April last year. On the day of the unfortunate incident, he posted about performing in his hometown on Instagram.
