A 31-year-old man in California did the unthinkable, and reportedly killed his girlfriend as she was driving, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into a river.
On Wednesday, a jury said Mandiko Kwadzo was guilty of killing Carliena Clayton in 2020. He used a gun during the crime and he was not allowed to have a gun because he is a felon, Law and Crime reports.
Kwadzo reportedly got into an argument on July 27, 2020, and a call was made to the Sacramento Police Department about gunshots being fired inside the home. Witnesses saw Clayton arguing with Kwadzo in her driveway before putting four kids in the back seat ranging from ages 2 to 6. She then got in the driver’s side and Kwadzo hopped in the passenger’s seat.
Witnesses report hearing a gunshot before seeing the car crash into a river with “little hands trying to poke out.”
Kwadzo got out of the car and saw it partly underwater. Good Samaritans helped save the four surviving children.
Kwadzo is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 6 for his sentencing hearing. He faces a maximum sentence of 53 years to life in a state correctional facility, according to reports.
