‘Crime Doesn’t Pay’…Unless You’re a Cop: Memphis Officer Swipes $18K From Crime Stoppers

(Memphis Police Department)

In a shocking case out of Memphis, former police officer Arica Hutchinson was sentenced after helping to steal more than $18,000 from Crime Stoppers, a nonprofit that rewards citizens for crime tips.

Hutchinson, who had served with the Memphis Police Department for 17 years, colluded to divert the reward money to herself rather than legitimate tipsters, WANE reports.

The scheme was uncovered through federal records, leading to her guilty plea. Hutchinson received a six-month prison sentence, probation, and must repay the stolen amount.

Federal investigators revealed that the money, meant to incentivize public assistance in solving crimes, was instead embezzled by Hutchinson, tarnishing her otherwise long-standing career.

Local officials and citizens have expressed disappointment and outrage, as the Crime Stoppers program plays a key role in solving cases. One Memphis resident commented, “It’s disheartening to know someone who is supposed to serve and protect the community could betray the trust in such a significant way.”

Though the department tried to keep the incident low-profile initially, public scrutiny mounted after the details of the federal case became public.

#Clique, they can’t blame this scheme on Todd! 🤣 IYKYK!
