In March, Michael Meyden, the Oregon father accused of giving drug-laced mango smoothies to three girls during his daughter’s sleepover, tried to take his own life, per the New York Post. This has raised concerns among the families of the alleged victims, who now fear that he poses an even greater threat. One close relative of a 12-year-old victim, whose identity is being safeguarded by authorities, expressed their fear, saying,

“We’re terrified.”

Clackamas County Senior Deputy District Attorney Bryan Brock stated in court documents that 57-year-old Meyden was hospitalized in March after taking an overdose of the sedative lorazepam. This suicide attempt worried the families of the victims, who viewed Meyden’s actions as a danger to the girls’ safety. They have requested the district attorney’s office to seek court approval for GPS monitoring of Meyden, who currently resides in Washington state.

Jeff Turnoy, the defense attorney, opposed the implementation of GPS monitoring on Meyden. He argued that he is maintaining stable relationships with his former wife and estranged children. He is also reportedly seeking counseling. Following the incident in Aug. 2023, Meyden’s wife filed for divorce and now has custody of their children. Meyden is currently facing several felony charges related to the incident.

How the shocking incident unfolded

According to a report from The Post, Meyden’s 12-year-old daughter had three friends over for a sleepover. Meyden allegedly served mango smoothies to the girls, causing two of them to fall into an in-depth sleep. The third girl became alarmed and sent urgent messages to her parents, desperately seeking aid. Distressed by the situation, the families of the girls hurried to Meyden’s house in the middle of the night to retrieve them.

Upon investigation, officials discovered that the smoothies were laced with benzodiazepine, a substance that slows down the nervous system. Officials stated that Meyden was found responsible for the drugs detected in the girls’ bloodstream. The motive behind Meyden’s actions remains unknown.
