28-year-old Danielle McLaughlin was found dead by a farmer in 2017 after being in India for only two weeks. The deceased was reportedly raped and murdered by Vikat Bhagat who she trusted as a friend. Justice has now been served as the prosecutor and her family are thankful that it was not denied after the eight-year murder trial.

The Sun reports that Bhagat was found guilty of Danielle’s murder and rape at the District and Sessions Court in south Goa last week. The 31-year-old has been slapped with a life sentence eight years later.

He received a second life sentence for rape and another three years for tampering with evidence. These sentences will run concurrently. He also cannot apply for release until after 14 years behind bars. Bhagat has spent seven years in jail as he was arrested hours after Danielle’s corpse was discovered.

According to the prosecutor, Bhagat has always been involved in crime since his teenage years. The prosecutor claimed Bhagat disfigured Danielle. After his arrest, he sparked a riot in prison and smuggled narcotics into the facility.

Even if Bhagat gets an appeal, the prosecutor is confident he will not win. They have proven every link of the chain in the evidence process.

The prosecutor went on to express gratitude that justice has finally prevailed. Per, the bereaved family stated that no other gang or suspect was involved as Vikat was “solely responsible” for ending her beautiful life.

The family highlighted their respect for the Indian legal system and the support of the British and Irish consular staff. They have also visited where Danielle McLaughlin spent her last days.
