In a chilling case out of Maryland, Candace Craig, 46, is on trial for the alleged murder of her mother, Margaret Craig, 71, in what authorities describe as a brutal dismemberment.

Prosecutors allege that Craig’s daughter, 21-year-old Salia Hardy, played a role in the aftermath, leading to her being charged as an accessory after the fact.

According to police and court documents, officers were called to the family’s home in Landover, Maryland, for a welfare check on Margaret Craig after neighbors became concerned. Upon arrival, they detected a foul odor and ultimately found evidence indicating that Craig’s body had been dismembered, 4 Washington reports. Investigators believe the murder took place on May 23, with Candace Craig allegedly attempting to cover up the crime over the following days.

Prosecutors allege that Hardy assisted her mother in disposing of Margaret Craig’s remains. The exact motive remains unclear, but authorities have suggested that financial disputes may have played a role.

Both Candace Craig and Salia Hardy are currently in custody, and their court proceedings are underway. Craig faces charges of first- and second-degree murder, while Hardy’s role in the case has led to an accessory charge.
