A Georgia police officer, who had been recognized as
“investigator of the year,”
was shot and killed on Friday morning while trying to break into his neighbor’s house, according to officials per the NY Post.
Aubree Horton, who had worked for the Atlanta Police Department for nine years, reportedly entered a home through the front door in Winston, Georgia, and came face-to-face with the homeowner. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. when the Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies were called about a break-in in the St. Andrews Country Club area.
Officials think Horton may have been having a mental health crisis or was possibly under the influence of drugs.
“When he gained entrance, the homeowner produced a firearm in self-defense and shot the individual,”
Capt. John Mauney said, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Horton lived half a mile from the place where he was shot.
He joined the Atlanta Police Department in November 2015 and was part of the Fugitive Unit, according to the department.
Horton was named
“Investigator of the Year”
at the APD’s Crime is Toast Awards breakfast on September 24, as shared on Facebook. Horton earned this award for his work on a case involving a missing 21-year-old man.
The missing man, Leondre Flynt, remains were found in July. Three people were arrested in connection with his death.
