For nearly four years, the Demirchayn family grieved at what they believed was the grave of their beloved matriarch, Hasmik Demirchayn, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Los Angeles. Tragically, reports from NBC4 Los Angeles reveal they had been visiting an empty plot due to a headstone being placed incorrectly.
Hasmik, who escaped the Soviet Union in the 1980s seeking a better life, died of a heart attack in 2021. Demirchayn’s children buried her in a family plot they had purchased years earlier.
Marine, her daughter, told NBC4 how she felt devastated upon learning the truth: “It felt like losing her all over again… We were just talking to an empty spot.”
The mistake only came to light this April during the funeral of Hasmik’s husband, when a mortician informed the family that her headstone marked the wrong grave. According to KTLA, her marker was on “space 1,” while her body rested in “space 2,” one plot over.
Feeling betrayed, the family has sued Forest Lawn Mortuary and Forest Lawn Memorial Park Association for negligence, fraud, and emotional distress, PEOPLE reported. Their attorney highlighted that fixing the error didn’t undo years of misplaced mourning.
Hasmik’s grandson told KTLA, “This adds an extra layer of hurt and pain,” underscoring the family’s ongoing grief and heartbreak.
