Orange County deputies had to kill a man who had shot and stabbed a woman, per WFLA. The man then used their 3-year-old child as a shield during an hours-long standoff, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO).
The incident took place on Colony Oaks Lane in Pine Hills, Florida. The deputies responded to the scene around 5 p.m. where they found the mother of the suspect’s child injured. The suspect refused to surrender and remained inside the house with the child and a gun.
Investigators said they negotiated with the suspect for several hours.
“During the negotiations, the man was talking in past tense and praying,”
Sheriff John Mina told reporters.
“We were in fear that he was going to do something to that child.”
The SWAT officers breached the house and saw the suspect using the child as a shield while holding a gun, according to the OCSO. Concerned for the safety of the child, they made the difficult decision to shoot and kill the suspect. The child was unharmed in this incident. However, the mother of the child is in critical condition and receiving treatment at the hospital.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the shooting and will share its findings with the State Attorney’s Office for further examination. OCSO will also conduct its own internal investigation. The deputies who discharged their weapons have been placed on temporary, paid administrative leave until the initial review by FDLE is concluded.
