A dog owner suffered a freak accident, injuring one of her eyes with a dog leash. This unusual accident changed her life forever. Thankfully, she has had the support of family, friends, neighbors, and even online strangers. It was a cool night stroll and all Daniella Abreu had in mind was to walk her husky which weighs 60 pounds. Abreu and her dog, Blu seemed happy as they sauntered on the streets of Stuart, FL where they lived.
Freak Accident with Retractable Dog Leash Costs Florida Woman Her Eye
But in a moment, the dog ran off after noticing a bunny. The 24-year-old immediately tried to restrain her pet. However, it was discovered that her normal leash had lost its hold as the dog’s size left it frayed. So on the night of August 7, 2023, she opted for an old retractable leash. Unfortunately, this made it easier for the leash handle to retract and hit her right eye.
According to the Florida resident, the dog leash accident was traumatic as she began bleeding immediately. Following the injury caused by the dog leash, Abreu’s adrenaline kicked in. She hurriedly ran home and was met by her instantly responsive parents. While recounting the story to People, the young adult explained that her mom was the first parent she met. Even though it was not a life-threatening injury, her dad was horrified. Abreu lost an overwhelming amount of blood as she was rushed to the hospital in Fort Pierce.
It was later determined that her eyelid had been featured with a detached retina. Immediately the doctor stitched her eyelids and she soon felt pangs of pain. Apart from dealing with the serious injuries caused by the dog leash, Abreu was traumatized. She was bedridden for some months and struggled with grieving and healing.
Following the stitching, the Florida native was sent to Miami for emergency surgery. There the accident victim was declared blind in her right eye. Unfortunately, she would not be able to see with that eye. However, the 24-year-old had to undergo four more surgeries. Consequently, her right eye was removed.
Amid the grief for her lost eye, Abreu did not have to worry much about the cost. She had supportive neighbors who set up a GoFundMe account to solicit funds for the dog leash accident. But despite the relief, she has had to relearn using one eye and suffers panic attacks and PTSD. Still, she remains committed to living a day at a time enjoying the blessings of life.
