38-year-old Darryl Anderson, intoxicated while driving his Audi SUV, took a photo of his speedometer while speeding towards the vehicle in front of him. According to AP, the photo of the speedometer showed a speed of 141 mph as well as a light indicating a collision warning. Moments later, he crashed into the car, resulting in the instant death of two individuals including an 8-month-old boy, and injuries to another. Anderson did not apply the brakes, reports mentioned.
Anderson was given a 17-year prison sentence on Tuesday for causing the fatal crash in northern England. The incident resulted in the deaths of 8-month-old Zackary Blades and Karlene Warner. Anderson pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving in Durham Crown Court last week.
The surviving victim, Shalorna Warner, who tragically lost her young son and sister discussed the terrifying moments of the accident in court. She recalled her vehicle spinning, witnessing her sister’s severe injuries, and desperately searching for her son, who was hurled out of the vehicle. A trucker who had stopped to assist discovered him on the opposite side of the road.
During the investigation, Anderson falsely claimed that a hitchhiker was driving during the accident. However, the prosecutor revealed that a roadside breath test indicated Anderson was significantly intoxicated while driving. Furthermore, an empty vodka bottle was located in his car. Witnesses later confirmed that he had been driving recklessly for a distance of 20 miles and his phone records showed that he was texting.
