Authorities are investigating an incident in Florida where an 84-year-old woman

“ran over”

a beachgoer’s head with her truck, as reported by PEOPLE

A press release from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office stated that a 71-year-old woman from New York was sunbathing in a beach chair near her vehicle close to the Silver Beach Avenue beach ramp. This occurred just before 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, February 5, during her visit to Daytona Beach with her husband.

While the tourist was seated in her chair, the elderly driver from DeLeon Springs backed her Chevrolet Colorado out of the parking space. She made

“an immediate right turn toward the beach exit, did not see the woman in her chair, and struck her with the truck’s right rear tire, which then ran over her head,”

the Sheriff’s Office said.

The 71-year-old woman’s husband contacted 911, as revealed by audio from the emergency call obtained by NBC affiliate WESH 2. “Hurry up! She ran over her head!” the woman’s husband can be heard saying.

“You alright?”

he asks his wife, who replies:

“No.”

The victim was taken to the nearby Halifax Health Medical Center with non-life-threatening head injuries and is in stable condition.

“The driver… remained on scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. She said she was not aware she struck anyone until she was chased down by a witness,”

deputies said.

“There were no signs of impairment.”

The city of Daytona Beach states that

“beach driving”

is permitted on Silver Beach, making it one of the few beaches in the U.S. where visitors can drive right onto the sand.
