Police in California are investigating a disturbing scam where a 73-year-old woman, Patricia Taylor, was swindled out of thousands of dollars by a person she believed to be a well-known cable TV host.

According to the family, the scam began when the victim, who had been following the alleged host on social media, received a message that seemed to come from the host, WLBT reports.

The impersonator claimed to offer a business opportunity and requested financial assistance. Unfortunately, the woman, trusting the source, sent money multiple times, losing at least $20,000 before realizing it was a scam.

The person behind the fraudulent scheme allegedly posed as Ari Melber, a popular MSNBC host, and used convincing tactics to gain the victim’s trust. This is part of a growing trend of scammers targeting older adults by impersonating trusted public figures. Authorities are urging people to remain vigilant, especially when approached with unsolicited offers from unfamiliar sources.

Police are working to trace the individual responsible for this fraud and have advised the public to be cautious about sharing personal information or sending money to strangers, particularly over social media platforms.
