Local officials believe Ashley Elkins’  former boyfriend, 33-year-old Deandre Booker, is the man seen in security footage pushing a cart with what looked like an arm hanging out. Elkins disappeared back in January from her home in Warren, Michigan, where she was last seen on Jan. 2. Booker has been charged with first-degree murder related to her disappearance, according to reports from PEOPLE.

Ashley Elkins’ family pushed for a police investigation after she went missing, which brought her case to light. Officials first arrested her ex, Deandre Booker, in Roseville, Michigan, for lying to an officer, and then charged him with murder in late January. During their search of Booker’s home, police found evidence suggesting Elkins was a victim of a violent crime, per Warren Police Lt. John Gajewski.

Despite extensive searches, no trace of Ashley Elkins was found.

What Happened In Court?

In court, Roseville Detective Chris Moran revealed security footage showing a man, believed to be Deandre Booker, pushing a cart toward a dumpster.

Detective Moran testified that the cart had something covered by a white sheet, and the man seemed to struggle lifting it into the dumpster. He also reported seeing what looked like an arm hanging off the cart. When Booker’s attorney questioned him, Detective Patrick Taylor said it wasn’t clear who the man was, but he wore similar clothes to Booker that day. Taylor added that they found similar clothes at Booker’s home.

Officials started looking into Deandre Booker in January after Ashley Elkins’ family tracked her phone to his home. Her sister said Booker showed up at Elkins’ salon on New Year’s Eve using a fake name, and she had to hide until he left. Two days later, Elkins vanished, leaving behind her two young sons. Booker faces charges of first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and more, but he has pleaded not guilty.
