Former NFL player Gosder Cherilus is apologizing after causing an uproar that resulted in a Delta flight to Dublin to double back and land in Boston.
Cherilus was arrested on August 17 for reportedly peeing on a fellow passenger, ESPN reports.
According to the police report, Cherilus emptied “his entire bladder for approximately 20 seconds,” on an elderly woman. He also “punched an elderly man on his way back to his seat,” police said.
He has since taken to social media to apologize and explain the circumstances, saying that a sleeping medication caused him to act up.
“The flight was unexpectedly delayed for approximately four hours, and it did not take off until after 12:30 AM. In preparation for the unexpected overnight flight, I took a sleeping medication that I don’t normally use, which resulted in behavior that is not representative of my character, and I would like to apologize to the passengers and flight crew.”
When the rerouted Ireland-bound flight landed at Boston Logan Airport, Cherilus was taken into custody and cited for being unruly and disturbing the flight crew.
Delta Airlines released a statement saying:
“Delta flight 154 from Boston to Dublin on August 17 returned to Boston Logan due to an unruly customer and was met by law enforcement. Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful behavior and will cooperate with law enforcement to that end. We apologize to our customers for the delay in their travel.”
Cherilus played previously for the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He will be arraigned in East Boston District Court.
