Mia Shay St Hilaire, a 12-year-old girl from #Bermondsey, #London, tragically died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to a milkshake she consumed at Pop Inn Café on Southwark Park Road.
#Mia, who had a known tree nut allergy, was visiting the café with her aunt and sister when the incident occurred. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she could not be saved, BBC reports.
Investigations revealed that the milkshake Mia consumed was prepared in a blender that had not been adequately cleaned, leading to cross-contamination with nut residues.
CCTV footage confirmed that the café’s operator, #BarisYucel, failed to clean the blender before making Mia’s drink, resulting in her anaphylactic shock.
“We think of Mia every day and knowing her death could potentially have been prevented so simply, only adds to how heartbroken we are as a family,” said her parents #Adrian and #Chanel.
In December 2024, Yucel pleaded guilty at Croydon Magistrates’ Court to six charges, including serving food containing an allergenic ingredient, lacking visible allergen information for customers, and failing to identify cross-contamination risks.
He was subsequently fined and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service.
#Clique, community service sounds like s slap on the wrist. Thoughts?
