Karen Huger surprised fans when they learned she had turned down two plea deals. Fellow Real Housewives of Potomac (RHOP)star Gizelle Bryant revealed Huger’s strange decision last week. Bryant also expressed distress over her co-star’s prison sentence, wondering how Huger would cope. Meanwhile, Karen Huger’s attorney has promised they would appeal her sentencing.
Karen Huger Rejected Plea Deals
In a show of overconfidence, RHOP star Karen Huger turned down two plea deals from prosecutors before her sentencing. Fans discovered this during Gizelle Bryant’s outing at the 21 Shady Questions Live event on Wednesday, February 26. Bryant revealed that prosecutors offered her co-star 60 days in jail or six months of house arrest. However, Karen Huger declined both plea deals.
Huger was found guilty of DUI in December 2024 and convicted on five out of six charges. Her charges included negligent driving, driving under the influence, failure to control speed, and driving while intoxicated. However, she got a reckless driving charge struck out. Meanwhile, Huger’s four DUI charges dumbfounded the judge, who said:
“Can we believe that she’s only driven while intoxicated four times in the last 17 years or is it more likely that she’s been very lucky and her inebriation has gone undetected?”
Fans React to Huger Refusing Plea Deals
Fans reacted with shock after Onsite posted the story of Karen Huger refusing prosecutors’ plea deals. They wondered why she declined such good offers and chalked it up to her not wanting to be accountable for her actions. Someone said:
“She was(or still is) in denial about to severity of the situation, & was trying to convince us as well as herself that she was not guilty. Her turning both of them down just shows she still even at that moment, she wouldn’t take accountability.”
“Declining 6 months house arrest is crazy when you’re facing yrs in prison,” a fan commented.
Another person commented:
“Wow. Unbelievable. Sounds like arrogance and ego reared its ugly head in this situation.”
A fourth fan remarked:
“Clearly she makes bad decisions. Give her some time to clear her mind before she hurts herself or someone else.”
Gizelle Bryant Worries For Karen Huger
Bryant also worried about Huger, whose refusal of the plea deals earned her a two-year prison sentence. The judge delivered the sentence on Wednesday, giving her a one-year suspended term. Thus, the Bravo star will only spend a year in jail.
“This just happened today,” Bryant said of the sentencing, per Us Weekly.
Speaking about her co-star, Bryant said:
“I do not have her wigs. I am concerned. In all seriousness, I am concerned for her safety. Karen ain’t cut out for jail.” The 54-year-old beauty care line founder added, “I pray that she’s OK and that the Lord is with her.”
Karen Huger Expresses Remorse
Meanwhile, Karen Huger told the court she regretted her actions. She said she had gained an understanding of every driver’s responsibility.
“I understand better the brutal clarity of the fact that when you’re behind a car driving, you’re not just driving for yourself,” she told the judge as she became emotional. “It’s my responsibility to make sure that my community members make it where they need to be safely.”
However, Karen Huger’s lawyer took a different stance, maintaining his client’s innocence. Scott Bolden said:
“Although we are disappointed in the jury’s verdict, we of course respect their decision and appreciate their time hearing our case.” He added, “We continue to reserve Mrs. Huger’s right to an appeal and intend to fully pursue justice on her behalf. We appreciate your support and prayers for Mrs. Huger and her family at this time.”
Meanwhile, Huger’s legal team tried to get a better deal before her sentencing than the plea deals and pushed for rehabilitation instead of jail time. They have 30 days to file an appeal.
Gizelle Bryant’s disclosure that Karen Huger got favorable plea deals but refused them is shocking. However, the RHOP star still got a reduced sentence, considering she has four DUI charges now.
