Authorities have reported the arrest of a 31-year-old man from South Carolina who allegedly abducted his son and led troopers on a pursuit that culminated in a fiery crash. The incident followed an attack on the child’s mother in Belton, South Carolina. The man fled with their 3-year-old son, holding him hostage and making threats to harm the child while driving his Ford pickup truck. According to The State, the man was apprehended
“across the Georgia state line.”
To safeguard the victims’ identities, the suspect’s name is being withheld by McClatchy News. After the man entered Georgia, authorities pursued him on Interstate 85. They observed smoke inside the truck’s cabin. The man then set the vehicle ablaze and jumped out of the moving truck, sadly, leaving his son inside. The truck was traveling at around 55 mph.
Authorities reported that the vehicle collided with an embankment and caught fire. When the flames were put out, deputies discovered the boy with severe burns on the driver’s side floorboard. The child was airlifted to a burn center in critical condition, while the man involved in the crash was also hospitalized. The 31-year-old had previously been apprehended for domestic violence, and the child’s mother had obtained a protective order against him, per the sheriff’s office.
The unnamed man is currently facing several charges. The charges have not been revealed to the public.
