20-year-old Medrick Burnett Jr., a linebacker for Alabama A&M, has sadly passed away just hours after the college mistakenly announced his death. He was pronounced dead at 5:43 PM, following an earlier retraction of the announcement when he was still on life support, reports the Independent.
Alabama A&M said,
“Our staff acted accordingly to the wishes of the family member to inform the A&M community and beyond of this unfortunate occurrence… Upon hearing from a representative from UAB Hospital this afternoon, we learned that he remains alive.”
The college sincerely apologized for
“disseminating false information.”
Burnett was injured on Oct. 26 during a game against Alabama State, just one day before turning 20. His sister, Dominece Burnett, started a GoFundMe for his expenses after learning he had serious brain injuries.
According to the GoFundMe,
“Medrick Burnett Jr., AKA “Meddy,” who plays college football for Alabama AAMU #51, was playing in the Magic City game on October 26, 2024, and was severely injured after a head-on-head collision during the game.”
#Clique, let’s keep Medrick Burnett Jr.’s family in our thoughts and prayers.
