A rising star who made waves on the TV show Billions, and was once interviewed by Oprah, was arrested last week on murder charges.

Akili McDowell, a 21-year-old, who also made a name for himself in “The Astronaut Wives Club,” and “David Makes Man,” was charged with the fatal shooting of Cesar Peralta in Texas last week, Law & Crime reports.

According to charging documents, “on or about July 20, 2024, did then and there unlawfully, intentionally and knowingly cause the death of Cesar Peralta, hereinafter called the Complainant, by shooting the Complainant with a deadly weapon, namely a firearm,” in an “act clearly dangerous to human life[.]”

McDowell reportedly was one of several suspects who “fled, and that a 20-year-old was found dead at the scene,” located in an apartment complex parking lot on North Thorntree Drive in Houston, Law & Crime reports.

McDowell was booked for murder for the July 20 shooting and has a $400,000 bond.

Back in 2019, McDowell was front and center talking with media mogul Oprah Winfrey about how he secured the title role in “David Makes Man” when he was just 15.

Jonell Whitt, McDowell’s manager spoke with Law & Crime and said that “[t]his is an unfortunate situation and I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy.”

“I respectfully have no comment at this time,” Whitt added.
