A former Disney employee who hacked into the company’s internal servers has been sentenced to three years in prison. Michael Scheuer, a Florida resident, pleaded guilty in January to computer fraud and aggravated identity theft, according to CNN. Last week, a federal judge also ordered Scheuer to pay nearly $690,000 in restitution, with most of the sum awarded to Disney.

Scheuer, who previously worked as a menu production manager at Disney, was fired in June 2023 for misconduct. During his time there, he had privileged access to internal systems used to create menus across the company’s restaurants.

Prosecutors said he later abused that access, hacking the servers multiple times. He reportedly altered menus by changing prices, inserting profane language, and falsifying allergen information. In some cases, incorrectly labeling items containing peanuts as peanut-free, putting customers’ health at serious risk. Disney was able to detect and remove the manipulated menus before they reached guests, CNN reported.

In addition to menu tampering, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said Scheuer modified wine region listings to reference locations of recent mass shootings. He also disabled at least 14 employee accounts by overwhelming them with login attempts.

At one point, Scheuer’s edits, switching menu fonts to symbols like Wingdings, caused Disney’s Menu Creator system to crash, forcing the company to shut down the application and revert to backups.

Scheuer’s attorney, David Haas, told CNN that his client remains remorseful and emphasized that the judge issued a sentence half as long as prosecutors originally sought.
