Mexican officials reported that four men, including a suspected corrupt official, were discovered shot dead near a Cancun resort. They were discovered Thursday along a highway leading from Cancun, according to the New York Post.
The officer was still on the police force as well as on medical leave when he died, reports noted. An ex-local officer was discovered searching one of the deceased individual’s pockets, who he claimed was a friend. He was later detained by officials.
Authorities suggested that the murdered men might have been involved in helping migrant smugglers. Cancun and Mexico’s Caribbean coast are often used by smugglers to transport migrants illegally, reports added.
Officials noted that the recent killings might relate to a previous raid involving drugs and guns.
