A French couple, Dominique and Gisèle Pelicot, both 71, are making headlines globally with the husband on trial as they appear in court on October 23. The case was officially taken to court on September 2, 2024, after accusations of rape and drugging his wife were confirmed. According to the victim, the wife, Gisèle, wants the trial to be public— to fuel the #GirlPower. This comes after she confessed to feeling “totally destroyed.”

Per New York Times, the police in France had their eyes on Dominique Pelicot for about two years before confronting the victim. Back in 2020, they discovered that the man had about 20,000 videos all detailing rape experiences. With the overwhelming evidence, the suspect later confessed to drugging his wife and inviting men to rape her.
Unfortunately, this lasted for a decade with Dominique acting like the perfect husband to Gisèle. His wife confirmed was never aware of being drugged. If anything, throughout their 50-year marriage, he presented himself as the nice guy, looking out for her. Gisèle confessed that he made her meals, and supported her medical visits for checkups. However as time went on, she began experiencing blackouts, Alzheimer and burnouts. This was when the police approached her with the news of her Husband’s crimes.
Allegedly, The Times reported that Gisèle now 71, was raped 92 times by 83 men through the years. However, La Parisien reported that only 51 men out of these rapists were being tried. Meanwhile, in court, Dominique isn’t feigning innocence over Gisèle’s rape experiences. He admitted to spiking her drinks and meals. Once she was drugged, he would search for men online who would come in to rape her. While this took place, the main suspect would rape his film his wife being raped.
The UK Publications said that his crimes went undetected until he was investigated for filming three women’s skirts in a mall. While Dominique Pelicot isn’t contesting the allegations, most of the men who raped Gisèle are. Some said it wasn’t rape as the man invited them into his home. However, another man has said he believed the victim agreed to get drugged.
These men between ages 26 to 73, have been scheduled for trial. As for Gisèle, she feels brokenhearted and destroyed that her husband of 50 years betrayed her. In fact, at 71, she fails to see the silver lining and how she could recover. However, she wants the trial public to help other female rape victims feel unashamed. The suspect is also linked to a rape case and murder of a 23-year-old in 1991.
