Caught On Tape: Soccer Player Dies from Lightning Strike During Game In Peru

On Sunday, two soccer teams with their fans gathered at the Coto Coto Stadium in Chilca.
Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca were twenty minutes into the match when the unexpected happened. Per CNN, the game was put on hold following a rising storm. But as the soccer players sauntered off, a lightning strike hit the soccer pitch in Peru. Immediately, nearly all the players walking away fell flat.

A few of the players stood up, leaving five down. In the video obtained by the local TV, there was a small misty air near one of the players. Unfortunately, the cloudy smoke had surrounded 39-year-old Jose Hugo De La Cruz, a defender who was soon declared dead. Four other injured players were rushed to the hospital. Less than a day later two of them were sent home.

Meanwhile, two of the injured players are still in the hospital. A Peru media agency, Andina reported that one of them was badly injured. He has been identified as a goalkeeper. However, the report says that the goalkeeper is recuperating.

The local municipality has extended condolences to the grieving De La Cruz’s family. Via a statement, the municipality explained that he died during a trip to the hospital. The statement acknowledged the injured players while wishing them a speedy recovery.

This is not the first time a player would experience such. Four years before it happened in Peru, a Russian player suffered a lightning strike on the pitch. This was during a training session, however the 16-year-old survived the strike.
