Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather once had a great relationship until things turned sour. In the latest episode of The Jay Hill podcast, Davis shared why he and his former mentor became rivals. Davis used to be one of Mayweather’s brightest prospects, and the older boxer mentored him to become a star in the boxing world. Hence, fans were surprised when the duo became enemies, engaging in a public feud and throwing insults at each other.

Gervonta Davis joined Jay Hill on his semi-weekly podcast, released on February 17, where he answered certain issues surrounding him. During the interview, the WBA lightweight champion spilled the tea about his fight with his former mentor. Floyd Mayweather trained and launched Gervonta Davis into stardom. Many wondered what had happened when the feud between the former world champion and his mentee broke out.
Hill eased into the conversation when he told his guest:
“One thing I thought about when preparing for this interview is the idea of idols becoming rivals.”
He stated that he has also experienced being tossed aside once their former benefactors no longer find them useful. However, the journalist clarified that he wasn’t sure if that was true with Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather. Meanwhile, Davis agreed that his host was right and noted that idols become more humane once one gets close to them.
Floyd Mayweather Tried To Teach Gervonta Davis A Lesson
Davis expanded on his statement, saying it can be a “letdown” when one realizes their idol is not who they seem to be. He then shared his experience with Mayweather and how the latter tried to set him up to lose.
“I’ve been in situation where, though, like, you know, I was in a lose-lose situation and now came out still on top,” he told Hill.
A curious Hill asked Gervonta Davis what he meant, and he told the influencer that Floyd Mayweather Jr. had once placed him in a difficult position. Davis revealed he was just 21 when asked to face José Pedraza. The 2017 fight would be his first world title, and he had been out of the ring for seven to eight months. Davis revealed that Mayweather insisted that he fight Pedraza or he would not get another opportunity. Meanwhile, Davis only earned $10k a fight, so he struggled financially. He had also been evicted from his house and had to sell his jewelry to survive. When asked if Mayweather did it intentionally, Davis said yes.
Gervonta Davis Reveals Why Floyd Mayweather Fought Him
Gervonta Davis and Floyd Mayweather parted ways in 2022, and their relationship has not improved. Meanwhile, Davis fought Pedraza to win the IBF super-featherweight title and clinch his first world championship. While speaking with Hill, Davis revealed that his relationship with Mayweather soured because of hearsay. When Hill asked him for more details, he said he didn’t want to “go too deep into it,” but he fell out with his former mentor because of his daughter.
“They were saying I was messing with his daughter after the fact that she kept Snapchatting me,” he told his host. “She kept hitting me on the Snapchat so they sent it to Floyd and Floyd bugged out.”
Davis noted that the incident didn’t end his career but destroyed his relationship with Mayweather because the latter tried to bring about his downfall.
Meanwhile, Davis has had a long and fulfilling career in boxing. He has also announced his plans to retire at the end of the year. We wish him well in his future endeavors.
