At Greenmount Cemetery in Philadelphia, a tragic incident unfolded during the burial of 66-year-old Benjamin Aviles. As pallbearers carried his casket, the platform surrounding the grave suddenly collapsed, sending several mourners, including Aviles’ son, into the hole.
Aviles’ son was trapped under the casket, unconscious with his face in the mud. The grieving family has blamed the cemetery and the Rodriguez Funeral Home for the unsafe conditions.
Benjamin Aviles’ stepdaughter, Maribelle Rodriguez, described the platform as unstable, soaked, and wobbly. She told WPVI that the whole situation felt dangerous.
Rodriguez is now seeking an apology and reimbursement, expressing dissatisfaction with how the ceremony was handled. “Nothing was done properly,” she said, demanding accountability for the interrupted service and hazardous conditions.
