A Hawaiian grandmother Henrietta Stone has bagged 10 years of probation in connection with the 2016 death of her 9-year-old granddaughter, caused by starvation. The arrested grandmother put an alarm on her fridge to prevent the kid from accessing food.

Henrietta had custody of the little girl at the time of her death in 2016. According to reports from local outlets, KHON2, Hawaii News Now, and the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, authorities were called to her apartment on June 28, 2016.

9-year-old Shaelynn Lehano-Stone was found unconscious and emaciated before she was taken to Hilo Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. The prosecutor’s office disclosed her cause of death as malnutrition. The young girl also suffered from acute kidney infection and acute pneumonia.

In 2020, Hawaii News Now reported that Shaelynn had been moved from her parents’ care to foster homes severally as a result of alleged neglect. The 9-year-old’s mother eventually signed Shaelynn over to her grandmother around 2011.

In November 2015, Henrietta Stone filed to pull Shaelynn out of school and homeschool her. Investigations into the deceased child’s death show that she suffered physical neglect, psychological abuse, medical neglect, failure to thrive, and psychological neglect by her parents and grandmother.

Henrietta Stone was sentenced on Feb. 13, by a Hilo Circuit Court judge who ordered that she should not serve any additional jail time after being in custody since 2017 while awaiting trial. she agreed to the charge in a deal with prosecutors, as she originally faced a second-degree murder charge.

The girl’s parents, 57-year-old Kevin Lehano and 41-year-old Tiffany Stone were also sentenced to 10 years of probation.
