‘He’s Going to Kill Me!’: Ex-College Basketball Player Eric Cobb Arrested for Murdering His Mother, Hiding Body in Backyard

Eric Cobb - (Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office)

Former University of #Connecticut (UConn) and University of South Carolina basketball player Eric Cobb has been arrested and charged with the murder of his mother, Erika Ellen Winford, in Jacksonville, #Florida.

Winford, 51, was discovered in the backyard of her home on 15th Street West, wrapped in blankets and towels, with multiple gunshot wounds to her head, stomach, and left leg, Law & Crime reports.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a call on Monday morning after a friend of Winford’s became concerned when she did not answer her phone.

Upon arrival, they found Cobb, 28, alone inside the residence and took him into custody for questioning. A search of the home revealed multiple bullet holes in the main hallway’s floor and evidence of attempted cleaning.

Authorities also discovered an AR-style rifle, a Smith & Wesson 9mm semiautomatic handgun, and live ammunition near Cobb’s bed. A trash can outside contained 14 spent 9mm shell casings.

Neighbors reported hearing a woman yell, “He’s going to kill me,” followed by several gunshots the previous day. Friends of Winford noted that she had expressed fear of her son, who had exhibited signs of schizophrenia and had been angry lately. They mentioned that he needed medication, but Winford could not afford it.

Cobb is currently being held without bond, facing charges of second-degree murder.
