A man lost his life on Saturday while sleeping in a hammock in the Cohutta Wilderness of Chattahoochee National Forest in Georgia after a tree collapsed onto his campsite, as reported by the NY Post.
The Fannin County Emergency Management Agency reported that four men were camping close to Panther Creek Falls when the incident occurred early that morning, trapping one individual beneath the fallen tree. A nearby father and daughter, alerted by the sound of the tree falling and the pleas for help, immediately rushed to assist. Emergency teams took about five hours to access the remote site after the call was made at 2:15 a.m.
Upon arrival, they discovered one man deceased and another with minor injuries. A helicopter successfully airlifted the injured hiker and transported him to a staging area where he was stabilized before being taken to a hospital by ambulance. The man who passed away at the site was also airlifted from the location by
helicopter.
